This disc presents three wildly varied sonatas, performed by Grammy-winning (2008) pianist, Garrick Ohlsson. Beethoven's Op. 22, composed at the turn of the century, uses traditional 18th century materials in a brand new way. Op. 27, No. 1, (Sonata Quasi una Fantasia) is an experiment in form, perhaps written in response to new sonatas by his older contemporaries Dussek and Clementi. Op. 110 is Beethoven's penultimate sonata, a richly inspired, mesmerizing masterpiece. These other Beethoven discs are available in this series: Vol. 1: Op. 7, Op. 78, Op. 101, (BRIDGE 9198); Vol. 2: Op. 2, No. 2, Op. 81A, Op. 111, (BRIDGE 9201); Vol. 3: Op. 2, No. 3, Op. 14, No. 1, Op. 14, No. 2, Op. 79, (BRIDGE 9207); Vol. 4: Op. 26, Op. 28, Op. 90, (BRIDGE 9249); Vol. 5: Op. 13, Op. 27, No. 2, Op. 53, (BRIDGE 9250).
Reviews:
“For these three sonatas, Garrick Ohlsson uses a rich, even sumptuous instrument and the sound is unfailingly beautiful. They are lucid, detailed, forthright readings.” - BBC Music Magazine
